Apleona equips new Biology Research Centre of Mainz University with building technology

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has commissioned Apleona Wolfferts Gebäudetechnik to install supply technology in its new Biology Research Centre, which is currently under construction. In the context of the work, Apleona is planning and carrying out installation of the heating, cooling, ventilation and air-conditioning systems as well as the sanitary technology in the two-building complex on the university campus in Mainz. The parties have agreed to not disclose the contract volume.

While Apleona is set to complete installation of the technical facilities in the first of the two research buildings in March 2018, planning work for all technical installations of the second construction phase is currently in progress. A five-storey research building with approx. 5,900 square metres of usable floor space allocated to laboratories, climatic chambers, areas for keeping small animals, seminar rooms, offices and common rooms is being built there. Venting and aeration of the 310 workstations in the laboratory is ensured by a ventilation system on the roof of the building that comprises four large ventilation units with a total output of 130,000 m3/h as well as four exhaust fans with an output of 8,000 m3/h. Cooling of the building is also provided via the ventilation units and, in areas with special cooling requirements, via radiant ceiling panels and circulating-air cooling units. The property is supplied with heat and cooling by two large heat exchangers in the adjacent building that each have an output of approx. 800 kW and are connected to the university's existing district heating and cooling network. In the basement of the property, in addition to heating, cooling and sanitary systems, the building-technology specialists at Apleona are also building a facility for preparing demineralised water that is needed for the research work. Installation of the technical facilities is expected to be completed by autumn 2020.

After its completion, the new research building will be home to the Institute for Molecular Physiology of the Biology Faculty as well as the Biochemistry Department of the Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry – Therapeutic Life Sciences and the Institute for Biotechnology and Active-Substance Research.
